In part I of this series, we talked about reflecting on first dates. Jumping into them organically, without preparing internally can increase the chances of misunderstandings. Here, we will talk more specifically about how to prepare for a first date that shows up for you. Please be aware that these are just suggestions from experts in this field.
BEFORE THE DATE:
- Remind yourself that nervousness is a universal feeling that people experience before a first date.
- Prepare the date in advance: knowing what to expect can reduce anxiety, so plan the details clearly to avoid misunderstandings.
- Choose a familiar place so you feel more in control and relaxed. Suggest a place where you can feel at ease, such as a favorite restaurant or coffee shop.
- Review your personal strengths and your date expectations. Remember that every date is about getting to know someone new and learning more about yourself in the process. It’s alright if things don’t go as planned, every experience teaches you something valuable.
- Prepare a list of light, non-controversial topics for conversation to help you ease into the discussion and avoid awkward silences. Try to find common interests.
- Chat with a friend beforehand. Share your pre-date jitters with a trusted friend. Sometimes, verbalizing your feelings can provide relief—and your friend might even offer reassurance.
- Do not google your date and then tell them about it. You will look like a stalker. Better get to know your date in person first.
ON THE DAY OF THE DATE:
- Practice self-care rituals. Engage in self-care rituals that make you feel good and boost your confidence before heading out. Whether it’s a relaxing bath, a skincare routine, or reading a chapter from your favorite book, self-care can help center your mind.
- Engage in relaxing activities before your date, such as music, walking, meditation, yoga.
- Give yourself a pep talk. Replace any negative self-talk with positive affirmations. Encouraging self-talk can boost your confidence and create a positive mindset as you head into the date. Remember, meeting a new person is an opportunity for growth and new experiences.
- Do not get flowers or gifts for your date, since you do not know them yet. Save it for later.
By implementing these strategies, you can transform your first date from a nerve-wracking experience into an enjoyable opportunity to connect with someone new. Remember, the goal is to enjoy the moment and get to know each other better. Our next post will share tips for during and after your first date.
