Open Relationships & Polyamory

The concept of an open relationship has been recognized since the 1970s and has evolved over time. There has been a grown interest in recent years. An open relationship is an intimate relationship that is consensually non-monogamous, i.e., any type of romantic relationship (dating, marriage, etc.) where one or more parties have permission to be romantically or sexually involved with people outside of the relationship. It differs from the traditional closed, or monogamous, type of relationships.

There are also different forms of open relationships. For example, polyamory refers to a relationship where there is a primary emotional and intimate relationship between two partners, who agree to at least the possibility of sexual or emotional intimacy with other people.

Open relationships can work for some people but not for others. It takes planning, awareness, and ample communication. Lack of a firm agreement and jealousy issues are common unfortunate occurrences in open relationships. If you want to see if open relationships are for you, please be intentional and learn and prepare for it. As with many things in life, the lack of effective planning can be disastrous.
