Women’s Sexual Challenges Are Real!

Sexual health issues tend to be more common in women than in men (43% vs 31%, respectively). Still, there is a misconception that such challenges are caused by the women themselves. This lack of knowledge about the psychological, physical and relational factors impacting one’s sexual health can lead to unfair blaming of women and to misunderstandings in a couple’s life.
Our therapists at the Relationship & Intimacy Center in West Des Moines, IA, takes this situation very seriously. As research shares more information about the causes and factors impacting women’s sexual health, we strive to provide support and strategies to help women feel more confident and educated about their own bodies.

Common Challenges faced by Women

  • Low libido
  • Mismatch between mind and body responses to sex
  • Difficulty achieving orgasm
  • Fear, anxiety and disgust with sexual contact
  • Compulsive sexual behavior (not sex addiction)
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Involuntary tension in vaginal muscles when something penetrates the vagina, such as tampons, fingers, sex toys, or penetrative sex.
  • Chronic pain, burning, stinging, itching around the vulva
  • Changes in vagina tissues due to hormonal shift in menopause
  • Endometriosis: sharp, shocking pain at deeper level due to pelvic adhesions
  • Sexual issues due to the impact of medications, past sexual trauma, and chronic health conditions (cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, etc.).

The Contributing Factors Are Many

Physical Health: the biology of our body is directly impacted by how healthy we are, our genetics, any chronic health illnesses, medications, and hormonal changes.

Mental Health: Psychological factors such as anxiety, depression, and stress can adversely affect sexual desire and performance. A history of trauma or abuse may also play a role in sexual health issues.

Relationship Dynamics: Difficult relationship with a spouse or partner may lead to conflict or distancing, which impacts emotional and physical intimacy.

Social Expectations: these can influence perceive and experience their sexual health. The sense of self-worth and body image can be impacted by the messages shared in society and by the media.
